It’s a partnership where a local dental practice partners with your school to support your teachers and Magic Dentist 'Smile Champions' in delivering magical, fun, educational sessions to help children learn about oral health, good brushing habits and the connection between the mouth and the body.
Sessions are interactive and can be tailored to be age-appropriate. The children make and learn how to perform the oral health tricks and are then tasked to perform the tricks at home to educate adults as their homework. The dental practice will also support in gaining access to dental care for those children most in need.
There are 6 lessons and 6 workshops. You will receive ready-made lesson plans, power point presentations, quizzes, 2 animations, workbooks, a 20-minute Magic Dentist movie, magic trick templates, homework sheets and stickers with a QR code that takes the child to a brushing animation.
Smile Champions are Year 5 and 6 pupils who promote good oral health by leading by example and encouraging healthy habits like brushing twice a day. They support younger pupils and assist with activities, helping to make oral health education fun and engaging across the school. They also help raise awareness through simple initiatives and by sharing key messages with classmates and in assemblies.
This depends on the agreement with the dental practice, but many schools receive visits once or twice a year
Potentially, yes, it is £1,500. If your school has a budget for programmes such as the Adopt a School, the school can contact a dental practice to partner with them and pay for it themselves. However, dental practices or external sponsors will often fund the programme. Contact Nicki Rowland for more information at nicki@themagicdentist.co.uk.
Minimal preparation is required other than coordinating activities and visits from the dental team internally. Some of the resources need to be printed eg magic trick templates. Other than that, the dental team will provide the teaching support.
The programme is designed for primary school children aged 4-11. Content can be adapted by your teachers to ensure that it is age-appropriate.
Yes. Our Adopt a School programme has been developed to support the national curriculum and teach children key Public Health England oral health messages. Oral health education also supports PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic education) and general wellbeing objectives.
Children gain essential life skills around oral hygiene, helping prevent tooth decay and build healthy habits early on. If a child does not have access to a dental practice, the longer-term goal is to provide oral healthcare for them.
Our charity is partnering with MPs across the country to take the Adopt a School programme to children most in need. MPs know their constituency and the demographics within it. This means we can take 'The path of least resistance' to access the children most in need of our help and dental provision. We hold regular round table events with our partnered MPs. This is a wonderful opportunity to discuss the impact we are having and encourage dental practices, primary schools and sponsors to attend and get involved.
